No, an FXR is not a Dyna Vic. The FXR was pre-Dyna. There are various rumors as to why the FXR was scrapped. Some say that the frame was expensive to produce. Others say that it was unpopular and looked at as too Metric looking at the time it came out. That is why they designed the Dyna to look more like the old 4-speed FX Harleys.
I appreciate that Joe. I guess I was a little confused because there is FX(R) and FX(D).. I always thought FX was the designation for the Dyna.

Nope, I believe FX is the designation for the naked front end. Where as the FL's have the covers on them. For instance a Softail Standard is an FXST, but a FatBoy is an FLSTF. The (D) in FXD stands for Dyna.
No possible. Take a good look at how a Dyna is put together. The FXR frame was better IMO but you won't get a TC engine to "fall out" of the bike under any circumstances. You would notice excessive vibration long before the mounts failed completely.
I think maybe you missed the word NOT in my post. I said I'm NOTthinking the engine would fall out. What I was wondering if that kind of abuse could cause a failure of the rubber mounts, particularly if the mounts were in bad shape already. I am certain if that kind of abuse could destroy mounts, you would absolutely have a vibration & handling problem.

They all degrade over time anyway as does all things rubber. So as they begine to crack & fail you really notice it when riding. The front mount especially.

That is true. When I bought my bike a little over three years ago, the first thing I noticed was it had an excessive amount of vibration, especially at low speeds 20-40 mph. I knew it wasn't normal because I had owned a Dyna previously. I changed both the front and rear motor mounts and it cured the vibration issue. Ofcourse, my bike's a 95, and the mounts I changed were probably the originals.
The X in FX stands for an XL front end. That was what HD put on the original Super Glide. This has changed over the years as the new Dynas now have a 41mm front end. But originally, the X was for an XL/Sportster front forks. D stands for Dyna.
ok so iam checking out this bike on c/l it's a 99 fxd nice bike the guy wants to sell it for an fxr what is the difference between the two and what is the difference with the 99 and the 06 and up i know they changed the frame up but is one better than the other i mean does the old fxr handle better than the 99 and does the 06 do better than the 99 hope this makes sense http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/mcy/1637265190.html
many differences. fxr is a totaly different animal. I really like that FXDX your looking at. Little expensive list price though. Lot's of great upgrades to that bike. It will be much stronger than a stock 06+ bike, not to mention handle better.
So I finally click the OP's link to the bike....very nice ride; a lot of upgrades as others have pointed out. He wants an FXR OR a bagger??? The FXR might have possesed "legendary" handling (for a HD) but it was also a lot lighter; that makes a big difference, too...however it also only came with the EVO motor and I think the TC is a far better performance platform; I origionally wanted an FXR to re-work but after being educated by the guys who educate the mechanics I went for an FXDXT; a model I didn't know existed at the time.
As for price; there are a few essentially bolt on upgrades on the bike in question; are they worth it to the purchaser? I'd sure want someone who knows his stuff to have a close look at it though; for instance, that's NOT the origional front end.....
