I'd be more inclined to go for something like this and then mod it how I wanted.

i would too....

i've got a 2008 fxdf, i had a 2000 fxdx and my wife has a 1990 fxlr...
The last one is the best steering one....
But i like the power and the looks of the first one best....
The brakes of the last two are way better....

Don't forget about your driving.... what do you do on the bike.... cruising or racing!!!!
the weight of the bike is also important....

good luck...

06 and newer are 49mm.

How can you tell? I'm not familiar with the bike and was curious.

The '99 FXDX is a styling exercise; the FXDX didn't get the good suspension bits until the 2000 models, which is also when the upgraded brakes were added...you can see the adjusters at the back of the lower legs near the bottom on the FXDX/T front ends. Like mine.
