Default speedo and ODO failure.

My speedometer recently started acting up. Giving wrong speeds, sticking at 50 or 70 miles and hour, then dropping to zero. Now my odometer is blank. Nothing at all. I can flip it to the trip meter, and that still works fine, and is accurate. Flip it back to odometer, and its blank. Sounds to me like the speedo is toast. Heres my question:

On a 1996 FXDL Low Rider

Wheres the mileage kept on these digital speedo's? Is it in the speedo or is there a computer that stores it independent of the speedo? If I buy a new speedo, is my mileage back to zero? If I buy a used speedo off ebay, does my bike now have THAT bikes mileage. Are the speedo's coded with some numbers that prove it came off this or that bike? Please advise.

Neil

it stays in the speedo itself. You buy a new tach, 0. if you buy a used one, you get that mileage. I'm sure they dealers can reset the miles though.

check ebay, I bought a tach on ebay for 25 bucks last week. Might have a harder time finding a speedo for a 96 though

Neil,
A few years ago my speedo acted strange also...I took out the speed sensor, cleanded it and problem was gone...

Speedo sensor probably needs to get cleaned out,
I have a wrangler and the sensor fouls up all the time and literally stops counting, and guaging speed. I gotta get under the car, pull the sensor and clean it.

Check the connections, more often then naught, its corroded and causes intermittant service.

Yes, thanks guys. Thats what I'm starting to hear. Seems to be more common that I thought. I'm gonna do that this week and see if that squares her away. Otherwise its back to ebay.
