I just bought my first bike, an 05 Super Glide and did all change in all the fluid because I had no idea when it had been done last. After reading the service manual, talking to the guy at the dealer ship and the auto parts guy this is what I did.
2.5 quarts HD 20w50 and HD Chrome filter
Almost 2 quarts of synthetic (Lucas I think) 20w50 for trans and primary.
Now I happen to talk to my old Harley Uncle and he has told me that puting the synthetic in primary is not good after service tech and parts guys said it was fine. What do you guys think? Should I buy the expensive HD primary stuff and redo it or am I fine? Thanks in advance!
you will be fine. Lots of opinions on oil around here but I'd say the majority of guys on here have synthetic in their primary right now, including myself.
MY 2 cents synthetic is better than regular oil, full synthetic really is not synthetic anyway just a more refined dino oil. I use synthetic in all of my vehicles.
is 20w50 ok in primary. i was reading yesterday of guys doing 75/140 etc. is the 20/50 too thin??? the parts guy told me syn 3 was good in all (trans, primary and oil) but now i'm not sure if this is true
Here's my oil:
Engine: Mobil1 VTwin 20W50 syn, 2.75 qts. (oil cooler)
Trans: Mobil1 75W140 syn gear oil (22 ozs.)
Primary: HD SYN 3 20W50 oil (26 ozs.) a bit pricey my clutches have been on it for 34K miles and no problems. Note the qty on trans and primary. Both bikes are set up like this and no problems.
Welcome to the Dyna family, it's a very capable platform for any duty.

You said you put syn in the tranny but didnt specify if you put syn in the motor. The motor should be your first place to put synthetic, that is where the heat is and where the oil is most stressed. Best to put it everywhere.
