Before I start, 2 things
1. I know this is a very touchy topic....everyone one is going to have mine is better then yours kinda view.
2. Remember if your going to bash me for this one "fight club rules" are in effect.
From what I can tell thunderheader is basically the end-all, be-all for exhaust systems when it comes to over all performance. (told ya I was going to cause a problem.)
Being that the bike is EFI & things like SERT's & Maps are all new "speak" to me.
So what is involed in changing pipes without dealing with the stealer for a 05 FXDi ? ( the bike came with a Stage 1 & SEII slip ons.)
Buy the pipes you like(can't go wrong with the Thunderheader) and buy the tuner you like or can afford (for me it was the Thundermax w/ autotune). Install both and then go ride. Done.
I like the 2-1s. I've heard nothing but good things about thunderheader (except some chrome problems - which can be fixed by breaking them in properly - see the most recent article on the home page) Personally though, I'm not a huge fan of the look. Hogrida did a great job of wrapping his, and I'll admit they look pretty bad *** - may even change my mind on them.
As far as installation/tuning: If you can install them (patience + know how), tuners aren't that expensive and very easy to set up, and you can save upwards of 1k vice having a dealer do it.
If you lack the know how, this site, a willingness to learn/figure it out, and time/patience will help you get through it. It's not that hard.
There ya have it...pretty simple! Wouldn't spend the money on a SERT though, even if you plan on doin motor work later on. I say this cause there are a couple other programmers/tuners that will be more than suffice for tuning a complete custom build & surely a simple stage 1 with available maps without a full dyno tune! The SERTs just take way too long for a custom map usually about 4 hours & the actual unit cost more aswell. If ya like changing & tryin different cams & such you'll be spending alot of cash on dyno time. Not sayin they don't work well cause they work very well...just cost alot more down the road! Other thing is the damn dealers sell these things to ya then they say ya need a full dyno tune for an additional 400 dollars & all the ****** do is download a map thats simillar to your build, make a couple pulls to give ya some #'s & steal your money! It's only obvious, I mean how many times have ya been to a dealer & hear them makin pull after pull on the dyno for 4 hours...NEVER! Cause they don't do what they say they do. Now if ya go to a private tuner & he's doin a custom map for someone, you'll be hearin wideopen pulls for half a day leaving nothing on the table knockin on all doors for the best tune! Just throwin this out there cause ya mentioned it's all new to ya, just hate seein people get fu**ed by dealers!

My bike came with Stage I (download) installed with Harley pro exhaust and K&N air cleaner. If you have a Stage I (download) installed you can probably put any exhaust on you want without a tuner.

This is the route I went, it took half a day, was stupid expensive and illegal in CA. and WORTH EVERY DAMN PENNY.He was able to pull more HP and torque out of my TC88 with a Screaming Eagle air cleaner, Thunderheader and SERT than allot of TC96s are getting now.Find an independent wrench your comfortable with and get the tuner he's comfortable with. This was a few years back and at that time the SERT had the most Tunability. This was a few years ago and the bike still runs as good as it did when it came off the dyno.

You said it right...find a REPUTABLE indy and use the tuner he's most comfortable with! Can't go wrong with that tune!
The sound and performance of the TH rock. The finish sucks ***. Mine is less than 1yr old, and there is plenty of rust to be dealt with on it. If you plan on going black then you have no issues.
