Weird noise rolling up between 50 and 55 in 5th.
It's a chattering sound, or almost like wind blowing
between a thin crack in helmet and face shield. Maybe
like valve clatter, but only in this speed/gear range.
Could this be the fabled 5th gear noise coming home to
roost after 27,000 miles? I'm mystified. Just installed
PCIII and SE A/C. Running great! Tranny and crank oil
look great. If it ain't one thing it's another. Please help
if you have any ideas! Don't want to tear it up.
The 5th gear whine is just that on both my bikes - a whine, not a chatter. And it's pretty consistent, not just between 50 and 55.
I'd look elsewhere. Sorry I don't have any suggestions other than the obvious - look at the changes you made since it started. Could be normal air intake sounds from your SE a/c - open a/c's definitely cause different noises than OEM units do.
you could disconect pcIII see if it goes away, double check all air cleaner bolts etc. change air cleaner back to stock see if it goes away, just process of elimination.
Changed crank oil tonight. Gonna ride tomorrow to try to isolate it. Couldn't really find anything in the service manual, and no noise for first 200 or so miles after PC install. I'm afraid it may be something serious after a little research. Possibly a flywheel/bearing issue. If anyone has any experience with this please post. Thanks for the other suggestions. I've been wearing a full face until the last few days, so it's possible I'm just now hearing it, but its fairly obvious. Might just have to bring 'er in. Damn!
Is it coming from the motor or somewhere else? I've had a few noises here and there and all turned out to be something simple, like loose timer cover, loose rear signal. Your best bet would go around and check everything from top to bottom.

Just got in from 30 mile ride. Clatter would start
in 3rd at about 40 and 5th about 57-60 climbing
through rpms. Seemed to come from top end like
valve clatter. Just for kicks I tightened my right
knee against the air cleaner. Bingo. Vibration and
harmonics at certain speeds would rattle the a/c.
Thanks a million y'all and thank you Lord. About to
resign myself to the worst! Boy do I feel stupid
