Louder noise while in 4th gear only.
I've got a 95 Electric Glide, I have noticed that when I put the bike into 4th gear, it has a whinny noise the other gears simply don't have. It only has 16,000 miles on it. Was wondering if I should try changing the transmission oil?
If I'm shifting through it going right to 5th gear on the highway, you don't notice it as much. But if driving in a subdivision say around 40 mph 4 gear seems to be where I want the bike to be it really has a louder pitch, As if the engine or transmission is struggling. As sound as I shift into 5 or down shift into 3, the noise goes away.
thanks in advance for any help! Peace my brothers!

that is probably normal- my 95 FLHTC did that too, so's my 88 FXRP
the gears are straight cut on the 4th gear in a 5 speed...so noisier...but 4th is stronger than 5th used for passing and pulling up a grade.
( in my '53 the 3rd is the strongest gear-the manual suggests 4th is for cruising and to downshift to 3rd to pull )
similarly the 5th is straight cut in the 6th speed shown on the left:
you can see the title of someone else's thread in the screen shot...they were concerned about the noise
helical gears ( slanted) are quieter when they mesh but are not as strong and can transfer side loading to the shafts.
