I have a 78 and runs great but all of the sudden I am getting a whine from trans( it sounds like an old heavy duty 4 speed muncie or something like that). When I have the clutch in no noise when I go up thru the gears the whine gets louder but once I get in 4th it seems to quite down. I dont think I was running the corrrect weight oil in the thing either could that have caused some damage in the trans? The noise just started all of the sudden while I was out riding. Now granted I ride the thing like I stole it, but I hope I didnt screw anything major in the trans. Please give any thoughts you might have on the subject. I built this bike myself and it is my first HD, I do have the manual but need some advice from someone that knows alot more about these old bikes than me.
Does it make the noise when it is idling in neutral? Drain the trans and see if there is any metal particles in the oil. From the sounds of it, you have worn gears and spacers from using the wrong oil. The bearings could be bad causing the gears to mesh at the wrong angle & causing the whine. The correct type of trans lube should be in your shop manual.
a good 50wt. like castol or other should be ok check ur levelalso u didnt say how long u rode like this could be shifter forks are not engaing gears fully or gears areworn or not shimed correctly let me know

It was a very simple fix not enough oil in the primary !!!! Runs like a champ no trans niose at all.

FYI......Not enough oil in the primary means not enough oil in the transmission either, so consider yourself lucky this time and keep all of the oil levels up to the full mark at all times.......pg
All 77 and newer should use Sportster Transmission Fluid in primary/transmission... if transfer valve in primary is blocked it's good for older too. Clutch operates better with correct fluid/oil price isn't issue.
