Default Completed bar/riser swap - Drags (pics)

Delayed by rain last night, I snuck away from work and rolled my test ride today and thankfully everything checked out. This is "stage one", a milestone in the evolution of this bike from when I got it used. I went in to swap from 14" wide apes to narrow drags on risers. I did not enjoy riding the apes at speed in the wind or lanesplitting with them. [due respect to those who can and do] The narrow drags have made this a whole new bike to ride. While I had the tank off I relocated front signals, removed horn, charcoal can, frame stickers, and trim ring from air cleaner cover. I realize the cables are longer then they need to be, and I will maybe fix that eventually. Thanks to those who provided assistance. In May I have my first gas welding class, and then I hope to work on "stage two" which will be the rear end. [Unless stage two becomes wheels and powdercoating first ]

Thanks also to Spade George at Hole in the Wall Redwood City for supplying the bars and risers and lots of support.

Hmmmm, not my thing. I'd rather see plain ol' apes that high. But you've made it your own, and that's what counts. Be safe!

Hey man I respect your opinion. In terms of what looks good, I wanted apes from day one, but when I was blasting down the freeway to work **** wasn't happening right. The apes were great at low speeds, but in order to ride fast I needed to hang on tight, and that put the bike in a position to speed wobble with all the weight I was having to put on the grips to hang on in the wind. Secondly the apes were right at mirror-height for tall trucks when lane-splitting and very wide. So the bar swap was more about practical riding than going for a certain look. I am now starting to understand how regional styles develop based on where one lives and the kind of riding one does.

Here's another example of the same concept, Spade George.

The thing is I re-used the cables that were attached to the 14"s. I never disconnected any of the cabling. I don't know the make of the cables but they all seem decent quality, clutch/brake/throttle. My original guess was that the orig owner had the bars put in at Michael's HD in Cotati where he bought the bike and had most of his service done, but when I called them the bars were not on the service history. Chances are good they are Barnett cables. [They won't give me the name/number of the original owner for privacy reasons, but he did take care of his services.]

Right on, and i agree with you on the whole changing styles do to where you are and how youre riding, i lost any attraction to apes for the same reasons; wobbles lane splitting poor control. thats where the Frisco/Cali High and Tight style came from, hills and lane splitting and fast freeway riding. im putting 13's on my bike right now, just waiting for the cables...

You could ask them to contact the original owner on your behalf and have them give him your info.
