Leaving ignition switch on
ORIGINAL: but Ill try 2 try
I still haven't gotten my fork lock fixed. Of course I took it to my dealer twice for them to do it but they figured they would ignore it, I just haven't had the time lately with work to find a new dealer and take it there.
RAP87, whatever happened with your last problem at RMHD? Wasn't it your engine or trans?

Had some problems with mine recently.

mudpuddle - The pin/bolt and the locking hole it fits into don't line up. I tried rotating the cylinder to no result. I'm disappointed that the factory would let it go like that without checking, and the dealer would sell it without checking, and the 2 times I told the dealer to fix it they never looked at it. It's sort of like all the derby cover torx bit posts lately. Their either put on too tight at the factory or after the 1,000 mile service. My dealer rounded out one of my torx screws and left it in there. I guess that's why Harley riders are so knowledgeable, they get used to being the one who has to fix their own bike problems. I would think most ricer dealers have a service dept. full of 19 year olds who are no better.
Had a Chief years ago who thought it was a good idea to run a battery down. When it recharged it made the battery stronger. That's Navy thinking for you. The only thing i'm concerned with leaving the battery on is runing it down. No kick start.
My fork lock is beginning to stick?

but Ill try 2 try,
I think you're just one "try" short. Maybe you need to "try 2 try 2 try" to remember to turn the key off ;-)
But seriously, I have had some trouble with this myself. My fork lock was hosed as well. I think because I never got in the habit of locking the forks I just developed a bad habit of leaving the key on. As you mentioned, I really only tend to leave it on when doing a quick stop somewhere. But I never left it on for more than a few minutes before realizing it and I haven't done it at all recently so I think I'm "cured".
Now that I have the fork lock fixed, I have a new habit to try to develop. I've gone out twice with probably 5 stops total since getting the lock fixed and I'm 0 for 5 so far . . haven't locked it yet :-(

Sounds like you personally did the in and out as per the service manual.
I read thru the SM today, and it seems pretty straightforward.
My local dealership, as well as the OKC dealership where I bought my 06
walks the new owners thru the key operations, as well as the
security coding/fob issues.
As a side note here, the OKC tech that delivered my scoot to me,
said - don't use the kill/run button.
What for?? Turn the key off, and put it in your pocket.
I've never left the ignition on.
Anyway, it does seem to me like your Dealer is
giving you the in and out, dry, and with no kissing.
It just doesn't make sense that the pin will not align with the depression in the tree.
The trees are all the same?????????????
The locks are all the same?????????????
Something don't add up right here.

Wow...I'm at 957 miles on my 06 bob and at about 600 miles the fork lock just stopped working.
The key will not turn to the lock position period it will only turn about half way between the off and lock position. Don't know what couldve caused that. Sounds like the fork lock might be a weak link though. Hopefully they will fix it for free with my 1000 mile tune that they want 330 bucks for. May just do it myself and just have them check the belt tensioner.

You picked up a service manual, right??
Try spraying some silicone lubricant into the keyway.
Solved my issue quick, and the silly don't attract dust and other cheit.
edited to add:
