Default derby cover torque screws

Any one have sucess breaking loose the factory torque screws for the derby cover ? I have twisted 3 craftman torque bits and have only managed to break 1 loose. The new cover I bought says after putting the cover on torque to 50-60, there ain't no way the factory screws are at 50-60.

Vnvjames, when I had my sportster and changed out the derby cover, I had to use an impact tool. It was a manual one where you put the bit in at one end and tap the other end with a hammer. As you tap it, it slowly turns the screw and eventually breaks it loose. I know it sounds harsh, but that was the only way I could get them off the first time. Good luck and don't strip 'em.

Agreed with the above. Even though I didn't use one and I subsequently went to drillin', the Harley Wrench on these boards recommended the same thing - impact tool. However method you go, get allen replacements.

Whiff

Seems like there's a plague with those damn derby cover bolts. They all seem to be overtorqued from the factory and subsequently strip when you try to remove them. Had to drill out four of mine.

I had to drill out 1 of mine the first time I opened it up. Of course that was before I realized I needed a # 27 torx bit not a #25 [:@] I have had it open plenty of times since then with no trouble.
