Hey all - Dont worry, this isnt a 'what oil to use' question. I changed my oil to the Syn3 in a three holes. I have noticed a ton more noise in the engine since and I want to get that crap out and put in some Amsoil.
My question is, I have 250 miles with the new oil, do I need to change the filter too? I would assume so since there is residual Syn3, but if I can avoid taking that PIA filter off that would be great.
I get a lot of good info from the site, thanks in advance..
Any noise you hear after the change-out probably isn't from the motor itself I would think, (others correct me as I'm new to the HD motorcycle), or there is something very wrong.
I just changed my tranny and engine oil the other day when I got my new bike home from the 'States. I used Mobile 1 20W-50 synthetic for the engine with a new K&N filter, (easy to get off without a mess, I got a shopping bag and pulled it tight from the other side around one exhaust pipe). Now, onto the tranny. I used Redline, (small town, nothing else readily available), 75W-140 and it explicitly says on the bottle not to be used for manual trans, too slippery and will cause the gears not to sync. I don't know, but it might be wishful thinking but the shifts might be a tad smoother with less clunking. I also have a 2007 Goldwing and sometimes I really don't know if it shifts or not it's so smooth!
Now I wonder if the different sounds you're hearing is from the trans, and also I'd change the filter because when you're dealing with such a small volume, there is still a lot of residual in the oil passages and the filter itself.
I would go ahead and change it. A filter is cheap and you may as well get all the oil out that you can get, and there will be a significant amount in the filter for sure.
