I took the football cover off my bike right after it was new and have been riding with an open air filter for over a year now. I've been through deluges on the NYS Thruway for over an hour riding home, never has as much as a cough from the bike. Unless you're riding through high standing water, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

I've been running an open A/c for 3 years , in heavy rain it can sputter if you get stopped for a while, but while running it isn't too bad . This is on a carb (Mik 42)

I carry an extra bandanna with me. When it rains I wrap it around the filter, no problems so far.
