Hey everybody. Here's a tip for those of us with an exposed air filter. I carry a roll of aluminum foil with me when I'm riding. If it starts to rain hard, I can pull over and fashion a cover with the aluminum foil and use the wind sock to keep it in place. Just make sure you leave enough of the bottom part of the air filter open for air flow. By the way, since I started doing this, I haven't been caught in a rain storm.
the only time that i've ever had a problem with an open element filter and rain is when i was caught in a really hard rain that was coming down at an angle from my right. and it really was hard enough that we should have got off the road, but we were in the middle of bfe and there was nowhere to go. so we rode to the next exit and took it and hunkered down at the gas station. otherwise, i have never really had a problem with it.
Thanks for the tip. Here's a story for you. Last year on my 10 day, 3500 mile trip I have a problem with my throttle. End up having to get a tow, no big deal, but, having the SE high flow air cleaner, and the bike sitting on the back of the tow truck, then the heavens open with the rain of the century, all the rain goes right into the air cleaner. Son of a biatch, new problem. Ended up no big deal but the entire time riding with the tow truck driver, commenting on how I hadn't seen it rain like that in years, forgot about the darn open air cleaner. Anyhow, made it through, drank more that night since I had the time, and will now never forget about the sock for the cleaner
I keep the rain sock on all the time on interstate rides, Ive heard of using a nylon stocking will keep the water out too. Just cut one leg of the wifes pantyhose off and dont tell her. lol
Great advise an Ideas here, I just Installed the SE, I don't use the sock as It would cover the the amazing amazing look, but In the rain covering up is a must for me..
I've got a heavy breather on my sg and last week coming home from sturgis we got caught in some serious rain, had my rain sock on but my bike started kicking and coughing these socks are probably good for some rain but don't think their the cure all cause there not.
