Riding in a light rain without the sock on for short periods is no big deal.
But in heavy rains for longer periods, watch for evidence of water in your oil. Milky colored oil is evidence of a water problem, and time to change your oil.
I have an open air filter element too, and was very nervous about what happens if it rains. I just came back from Sturgis and got caught in a major storm down there. I have the K&N system for my Springer. It rained hard for at least 45 minutes while riding on the highway and i did not have a rain sock on. My system does not have one. The bike did not miss a beat and ran perfect all the way home. I have read that if you keep the element oiled, you will not have a problem with the water. The oil prevents it from penetrating.
I carry an old nylon to use in heavy rain when on the road ..... never been used. I've even forgot to cover it when washing the bike and have never had an issue.
