I am looking to change the handlebars on my 2010 FXDC. I installed have 4" risers on with the stock bars and don't like the look. Stock bars + 4" risers is about 10" to 12" so my thought is to go back to the stock risers and get taller bars. What bars are you all choosing, HD or aftermarket? Can you stick with 1" diameter or do you have to upgrade to 1 1/4 ? My guess is 1" bars may start to flex at some point when increasing their size. Are you keeping the stock risers? I understand if you go to 1 1/14 you have to change the risers. Besides cables did you have to change anything else? I would appreciate thoughts shared on what you have learned in this process
Thanks in advance - Bikersully
I've got HD's fat mini apes(1.25"), on top of their fat risers. Risers are 4" and bars are 10.5". I internally wired my controls, and had to solder in 8" extension to the wires. For cables I went with 'stock +4' Barnett. Front brake line is the two piece HD Diamondback (rear to match).
With the +4, all the cable bends are nice and easy. I also went with all chrome controls/switches at the same time

now take a good look at your bars. If the rise matches the rake of the fork, your bars turn down and the end rise will be almost level with the risers. So you do not have 10" end rise at all. From this as well, you do have 10" or so of pullback though. So, if you want to end up with your hands in about the same position, wild1 T-bar drag bars will get you there, however they will have less width and your hands will be facing more forward. Your reach and height will match up closely to what you have now with the 8" rise model they make.
Lots of options on bars so you need to narrow down what you want.
Pick a style of bar you would like then pick one that puts you in the postion that you want.
Personally like the looks of 1 1/4 bars better and depending on the bars you may not have to switch risers. Alot of them will only be 1 inch at the clamp.
I went with Carlini Super sweeps because I like T-Bars but wanted alot of pull back. These have 9 inch rise and 11.5 inchs of pull back and sit me very comfortable.
I did the same thing you did at first, 3.5 inch risers with stock buckhorns. I have since dumped the risers and the buckhorns.
I decided to go with the stock risers and chrome mini apes from a Street Bob.
Comfort and look factor is exactly what I wanted with this combo. You can get the stock street bob bars from harley for about 60 bucks, and you can get them on the parts forum for around 30 bucks. If you choose this route you will need to change the brake line and clutch cable as well as throttle idle cable, at least I did on my 2007 FXDC.

Cheers and good luck,

I did the same thing, got the bars and cables for under $100 from here on the forum, and they look and feel great....lots better than the stock ones. I got the '09 Street bob bars which are already set up for internal wiring.
