Serial Crusher, I am also deployed, but at Kandahar, Afghanistan.
I took advantage of the deals we get for being deployed and I purchased a 2010 SB. Saved about $1,500 versus buying it in the states. I can't wait to go home in July to take her for a ride!!!

If I were you I'd purchase one soon. I'm sure you've heard about General McChristal taking away BK, Pizza Hut, Military car sales, and other stores out of Military installations in Afghanistan. I'm not sure if Iraq is affected by this or not. Military car sales is shipping out of here May 1st.

So, I’m looking into getting a Harley when I get back to the states (in Iraq for the third time, sigh) and I do have riding experience (sport bike in the 90s), and I know that I will outgrow a Sportster in about a week. The Dyna looks to be the perfect bike for me (It’s a real bike and reasonably priced). Looking closer at the Dyna line the Street Bob jumps out at me (I really dig the blackout look of it in black denim),
My question is besides the obvious cosmetic differences between the Super Glide and the Street Bob what will I be getting for the extra thousand bucks? Also can someone recommend some good books on Harleys? I like to really get into my vehicles, with the customization and whatnot. Thanks in advance for your help!
I just bought an FXDC (Super Glide Custom). At first, I just wanted a basic black, regular FXD. Then I went and looked at them in person. The FXDC (to me) seems to be the best deal going. Well worth, really well worth, the extra grand or so.

I didn't want the WG because, well, I'm not that tall. I'm only 5'9" and didn't want to mess up with the forward controls. And no way I'm going to put FC's on my Super Glide. Just not gonna happen for a variety of reasons. I did put highway pegs on it using some Custom Chrome, frame-mounted plates and the same pegs (Airfoil) as on the mid-mounts. Comfy, and I don't have to mess with the forward controls.

Tried the Kury swing-wings. Bastiches tried to kill me.

Everybody is different. Everybody looks different, everybody is built different and everybody wants different stuff. I know guys that just wouldn't 'look' right on my bike and I sure as heck wouldn't look right on theirs.

You're going through the best period of the Harley experience. Enjoy it.

loved the look of the seat, but my wife said after just 30 miles or so, it was flat out painful. i changed it to a lepera maverick, and havent had a single compaint since.

Billy,

I've got the same bike. What's the difference in the rider area of the Lepera from the stock. Bigger, smaller? Wider, narrower? Just better foam, better comfort?

Put tons of time and money into it changing just about everything ...
Like rounder, I was a little budget constrained and got the FXD ... and spent several grand changing all kinds of stuff!

I also got mine through the military overseas sales corp (ENCS) ... I was at sea and executed the entire transaction via e-mail, so whether there is a 'dealer' with 'boots on ground' where you're at shouldn't make a difference as long as you qualify for the program ....

I heard from a buddy of mine who had purchased through the program that there are differing discounts depending on where the ENCS agent is located. I think he said something about the agent in Italy (Sigonella) being able to offer a slightly better offer than the agent in Japan (Yokosuka) ... not sure if there's anything to that, or not.

If I were doing it again, I probably would not buy new ... there are tons of good used (low miles) bikes on the market--many of which have mods that you might want ... (for example, big bore kit) ....

You might want to wait until you get a chance to take some test rides to see which bike is for you ... I found the stock bars on my bike killed my shoulders after riding more than about a half hour ... switched to mini-apes and it made a world of difference (major improvement) ... but, I dropped over $700 for the dealer to install them (with new stainless steel braided clutch, brake and throtte/idle cables) ... [would never have the dealer swap out the bars now ... would definitely do it myself, but the cost of the bars and cables will still run around $250 alone, depending on what you get]

But, my point is don't forget to factor in how much you might spend on fairly mundane stuff like forward controls (around $300 - $500) / handlebars when you think about your budget for your bike ....

Remember e-bay and craigslist are your friends ... also, do a little research on where to get the best internet pricing for genuine MoCo parts (don't necessarily just run to the closest dealership) ....

Good luck picking out your bike and welcome to the forum ....

If I buy a new bike and I’m not going to save any money I would rather go with a dealership and get support from the dealer, you know? But thanks for the tip!
That sucks!! Back in 90 when my family went to the Philippines my dad got his FXR for $100 below USA dealer cost. It was built and sent to Orange County HD and when we picked it up they asked my dad how did he get it cheaper then them. I think he paid just over $9k out the door. If anything find yourself an MSRP dealership. My buddy bought his nightster from a marked up dealership and he could have walked out with a Street Bob. Here's a link with a list. I had a better list, but guess I didn't save it!! Good luck!

bones77,

the maverick passenger area is wider, flatter, and firmer than the stock seat was. i have some good pictures posted of the seat on another thread here from several months ago.

the passenger section of the stock seat was almost shaped like the end of a nice loaf of italian bread. though the stock seat looked real nice, it wasnt too functional for two up riding.
