Been doin' a lot of searchin tryin to find my perft first HD. I have settled on a Dyna but still not sure which one. I like the street bob only because I like the blacked out look (minimal chrome). Do any other dynas have the blacked out motor, oil bag, etc? I'm looking at spending $10k - $13k. I can get an 05 or 06 with some goodies or a 07 with 96 and 6 speed........ hmm decisions... decisions... Any opinions?
I also wanted to say this board is awesome and all you guys have a lot of great info to give. I really enjoy reading and following the threads.
Well if you really want a black motor,I think the FXD and the FXDC are the only ones that come with gray at least in 08. My advice to you would be get an idea of what you want the final product to be and see what bike is closest or best price color and so on. I would have got a FXD in a minute if I could have got Denim Black, or I would have got a Fat Bob but it didnât cone with spokes and I didnât want the rear fender. I guess donât look at the bike picture what you want in the end and see if it will work.
YOU CAN GO WITH THE CUSTOM IF YOU LIKE CHROME OR THE BOB IF YOU DONT LIKE CHROME....THE BOB HAS APES THE CUSTOM DOESNT... OH AND ID GO WITH THE 96" 6 SPEED.
This was a really good dyna, i rode one for the better part of the summer last year. If you are good with the 88 and 5 speed, it would be a great option.
I'm not going to knock any of them because they are all great choices. If you can't buy knew or don't want to spend more than 13K, then you've eliminated the Fat Bob and the Wide Glide right off the bat unless you can really find a great deal on a late model WG. If you must have a black motor, then that throws out the FXD and the FXDC. That pretty much leaves the Street Bob. And, IMO, if you want a blacked out bike, that's the one. There are some guys here that have some sweet blacked out bobs on here so take a look around. No matter what you get, you are going to want to change some things around so don't let things like handlebars or seats make your mind up for you.
I have to throw in, though, for $12,995, just under your price range max, the FXDC is the most bang for the buck in the whole dyna line. It's chromed though and it has a grey motor. I haven't yet figured out why some guys have a fixation on the color of the motor. Not saying anything is wrong with it but I like them both and never really gave it a thought when I was choosing a bike. On the other hand, if you want a blacked out bike, I guess a black motor is an important part.
Good luck but it sounds like to me you are homing in on a Street Bob.

I really don't want the maintenance of a bunch of chrome, but it's not a deal breaker. The only thing I don't like about the FXDX is the handelbar mouted speedo other than that its a great looking bike

The chrome is the easiest part of my bike to clean. After washing and blow drying the bike, I just take a cloth or some paper towels, spray some windex on one side and wipe it down wet and then wipe again with the dry side. With anti-blue pipes/heat shields there really isn't anything you have to polish anymore as long as you keep it fairly clean. Yesterday was the first time I cleaned my bike since January. It's not that big a deal.
By the way, the FXDX is not made anymore. The FXD has a bar mounted speedo and it does make for some challenges if you want to change your bars, etc. But the FXDC has the chrome console with the speedo mounted into it on the tank.
