If you knowingly put an "illegal" exhaust system on your bike, then get told by law enforcement you're breaking the law, the problem is?????

Daytona Beach tried the decibel limit type law and found it far to difficult to enforce. They have to prove they're the correct distance away, no excessive ambient noise, etc, etc. They replaced it a couple years ago with one prohibiting "unnecessary displays of excessive noise" or something similar. So rev your pipes while you're sitting at a light or going under an overpass and they got you - even with stock pipes. Ride responsibly and respectfully and you're fine.

I support rational noise ordinances. Bike, tuner tween fast and furious car, boom box stereo systems, whatever. You have the right to enjoy yourself up to the point where your enjoyment negatively impacts others.

Put my vote in the "if you have loud pipes and get the ticket pay up and don't whine" camp. If you disagree with the law, get active and work to have it repealed. That's what a republic is all about.

complimentary pipe check?

sounds like a nice way of saying "you're on a motorcycle so we're gonna stop and hassle you"

FWIW...106 is a fairly generous number.

but if it were me, a letter to local legislature would be my course of action.

i'm not gonna complain if i get a loud pipes ticket, my pipes are way too loud to be legal.

but a letter stating, calmly and rationally, that you feel discriminated against and profiled, and asking how they determine what's legal and what isn't...isn't bitching, it's seeking information and wanting a few answers from the people in charge.

my 2 cents.

hmmm.. comp pipe check, comp seatbelt check, comp green card check, comp DUI check... I did see in small towns on my last trip that they enforce noise ordinances but I do not intentionally rev through the town to make noise in the first place. Like many others I do not have a tach on my bike. When they make you crank it to whatever rpm they come up with to check it seems lame to me! Though there are some that do like to do that, hey look at me... not all ride HD's either!! There are some pretty obnoxious pipes on some rice burners... cages included. I guess when the time comes I will have to change mufflers or whatever it takes to stop the drain on the wallet.

http://home.ama-cycle.org/amaccess/l...t.asp?state=NH If you were that close quiet baffles might do it, I put the BCT QQ's in my Sideshots and gained power, it toned it down a little but was still kinda loud. I just did the Supermeg and now I'm quiet, my neighbors sure like it.

Sorry, but that's not complimentary. That's not even legal. Complimentary is something offered for you to pull in to stop and have done at your convenience and have checked. Then if you are at fault you have an opportunity to correct the situation, you don't get ticketed. I would take this ticket to court in a heart beat and I would also walk in with letters submitted to my local DA, Commissioners, City Council Members, State Attorneys General, and Congressman. I would also make a request of the court for my time reimbursed spent during this so called "complimentary stop". I've been in court before over BS and buddy this is BS!

Default Loud Pipes

Here in Tennessee all the law says is that you must have baffles. It doesn't say they can't be loud. Consequently they never pull you for pipes. Most of the time it keeps the idiots from pulling over on you but not always. Last time I was out on the bike a guy almost ran me into opposing traffic.
I am a firm believer that loud pipes save lives...If this wasn't true firetrucks wouldn't need sirens. I also KNOW for sure that firetrucks have to deal with idiot drivers too.
I just looked at the AMA site for state laws and it says there is no acoustic criteria. Thanks paul s.
