Default Good old days

How come the new bikes don't have a reserve fuel tank? I had a Honda and a Sportster years ago that had reserve tanks. You'd start to sputter and all you had to do was flip a lever and you'd get enough gas to carry you another 50 miles or so.

The Cool Factor was up because you didn't have to be THAT concerned...

Now we got $20,000 bikes with gas guages that lie to us.

BOS.

It's not cool to ride around wondering how much gas is in the tank.

I think they ought to bring back the reserve tank.

Tough to do when you're running FI. If carbed h-ds were still made then you'd be awright.

Learn your tripmeter and you won't worry. Reset your tripmeter on fill up, ride it until you fill up again. Note your miles traveled and amount of gas put in. Do the math to get MPG for your riding style and calculate how much riding you can do on 4.0-4.5 gals of gas. Always fill up at that number of miles and you'll never sweat again.

For me, on a Fat Bob with XIEDs and punched stock pipes, it's 184 miles to 4.5 gals. I know I can get 194 out of a tank because I've pushed to empty before, but I always do that on any new bike, even when they had reserve...I like to know, learned from my Uncle.

plus, you never have to worry about forgetting to take it OFF reserve after you refuel.

Or turning it on for that matter if you're running a leaky S&S carb...No more "Turn the GAS on, Dummy" stickers...

I'm with you on this. The petcock used to be my gas gauge and I never cared about how much gas I had. Now it's allways on your mind.

Plus about 10,000 what he said. More than once I refueled my reserve tap equipped KLR......and left the tap on reserve. Not good to run out in the boonies cause of my stupid bonehead move. Luckily, I had an additional 1 gal container of fuel strapped on.

I never have to wonder how much fuel I have. I know I get anywhere from 38-42 MPG (I check it on every fill up) so I can assume at 190 miles on the odometer that I will be empty or near it. As a matter of fact I can just about tell you exactly what my tank will hold when I fill it just by doing the math. I don't understand why anyone would want to rely on a gauge anyway.
