Did multiple laps on the XR1200 at Sturgis while the wife tried out most of the other bikes; what a sweet all-round HD, especially for town and short freeway hops...if I could justify 2 HD's in the garage for me, one would be a Sportster with some jam and handling (my first HD was a 100hp/88ft lb '01 XL with Progressive suspension). You have some expectations that are not being met by the FXD and you've got the FLH for backup/2-up, so have fun.
If i ever owned an xr1000? You are a funny guy. Kick my own ***. I have owned 40 bikes and would have liked to keep most of them, but in moving them i got to experience lots of stuff. Turbo, etc. Xr had baiskey heads, se and then red shift cams, vlose ratio trans, pm brakes, koni shocks, flat side carbs, dynajets, plus stuff i do not remember. It was pretty fast, torqey, stopped well, handled ok for and 80's era rock. Worst riding bike i have owned. Throttle return springs would kill your wrist in 30 min. Fun and loud. Oh stainless super traps w/28 plates. Sold it for 7500 in 1989.
That's a tough one. I really like the XR1200 and would love to have one as a second bike. Rhino, that has to be coolest XR1200 I've ever seen. Nice work.
OMG ... I've been dealing with this issue for awhile myself. I come from sport bikes (zukies) & picked up my SG for long distance & all that old man stuff. Only issue is. I'm just not that comfortable with loss of braking power, forward controls ( I thought i would of liked) but its just not super fun to ride like my sport bikes. ( yes I know apples to whatever )
That photo just didnt help me with this on-going issue.
Btw there was a post about being 'Soaked" on trade in... if your local dealers are like mine. Thats a understatment! More like just bent over & ..... you get the idea.
So if you can take the loss in trade in & you do have the 2nd bike for distance rides. I see no reason not to have the XR1200. Dont see them falling out of style. Its one of the core H-D bikes. Think about how long the XR wasnt around & how everyone was shop building their own.
If I had a bagger in the garage and the funds for a 2nd bike, it would most definately be of a sportier variety. The XR would certainly be in my top 4 choices. Other candidates would be a Ducati Monster, Triumph Thruxton, and the Moto Guzzi V7 Cafe. No fully faired sport bikes for me.
