Default Free spinning starter

Hi all.

Any of you mechanical wizards out there can help with this one?

1998 Dyna FXDS. Tried to start her today but the starter motor sounds like it's spinning free but it won't engage and turn the motor. I've head the sound a few times before but she's always started on after two or three tries.

Any ideas would sure be helpful.

Thanks a heap in advance.

Mucklepilly.

Starter clutch is bad or solenoid or both. Keep bumping it and you might get lucky but better order the new parts if you are going to DIY. If not make sure your dealer has them so you don't get stranded waiting for parts.

Thanks KB.

Is there any point in ripping the starter out and lubing the shaft? I can hear the solanoid trying to work but it sounds like it throw the bendix out far enough. I know I've done that with cars in the past, whaddy reckon?

Once the starter is out you may as well have the drive clutch in hand 'cause no amount of lube is gonna replace that for you.

Same problem here and it was the overrunning clutch. Supposedly a very common problem but then what isn't.

Default Job done

Thanks for all the advice. It was the over-run clutch which stopped co-operating. All done and back together now and not even the trace of a leak from the primary cover after the first 120 miles.

Cheers - mucklepilly.
