My speedo is going crazy. Starts out fine when the engine is cool but 10-20 min into a ride it starts flipping out and eventually goes to zero!
I talked to Harley, dudes said its usually the wires that go to the sending unit... yeah, I checked them... they're on there... I can't tell if they're good or bad and don't want to fork out the cash for the dealer to do it if its just the sending unit... Anybody have any thoughts where the issue may be? Do I have a bad gauge, Sending unit, wires, fuse, or is it the gear in the Tranny? Oh crap... this sounds expensive.
An allen bolt holds the sensor into the case. Not too easy to get to, but doable. Pull it out, clean it well, and put it back. That fixes many problems right away. Good luck!

Had same issue on 2003 Ultra Classic. Cleaned metal off sensor re-installed sensor. Worked aboout 100 miles then more problems. Bought new sensor $65.00. Bike had close to 35K miles on speedo when it failed..Very easy part to locate. Remove seat to locate wires and unplug. Hope this helps.
I got an 02 Wide glide. All I see is the sensor sticking out from the top of the tranny. It screws out easily enough... but no allen bolt. Am I looking in the wrong place?
Thinking back, sensor was located on right side of bike top of tranny. Couple years since I sold bike. The only other problem I had was a loose battery connection causing speedo and tach to act crazy, good luck. Do a search and you may see something that helps. Someone must have a picture of location and part you are looking to replace..
My low Rider started the same nonsense. I went to the dealer, bought a new sensor and installed it. Nothing. The experts told me to check the wires under the tank as they often get pinched or wear through as well. Thats the route I would recommend first since its free, vs the 60 bucks for the sensor. Most likely its one or the other. Last possibility is the speedo itself took a dump. Now thats expensive. i hope for both of us it ain't that. You can always pull the speedo and take it to a dealer, they told me they could check it if needed.
