The 4* advance kind of mimmicks a slightly higher compression...closer to 9.8:1. The TW6 likes 10.2:1 as it's sweet spot.
Some people use the 4* advance in lieu of milling the heads as a temp fix.
Stock, the 96" is ~9.5:1 compression in reality. You could also use a .030 head gasket and gain about .25-.3 in compression. I did not go that route.
So did you ever get your timing gear snafu figured? As to adding the advance gear, it's not "mandatory" just more of a " you're in there do it" type of thing, no?
You don't need the advance. On my 96" the .030 head gasket gave me .25:1 more compression, the 4*advance would have been .14:1 more, it's just a small bump but that's all I was looking for.
Think I'll go with just cams, possibly gear route if I can get one shipped with my cams. If I'm going to pull the heads to add thinner base gasket I may as well have em ported lol. Unfortunately the budget won't allow that just yet.
Ya that's one reason why I want to leave the heads on, just one more thing I can talk myself into spending money on lol. Ah well, I only have to ride it this way til winter when the "Big-Bore Bunny" comes to visit
THEN the heads etc will be done and can put the proper package together.

Yeah...I figured it right into the corner of my toolbox for the moment.
Right, installing the advance gear is an option not a necessity.
