"98 Rear brake issue
I talk to the service writer and he mentions that they lubed the caliper as it seemed to be sticking. No time to look at it today though as the Mem. Day crowd has flooded the shop. Never mind, I'll check it myself.
I stayed off the rear brake while riding the back roads today and took off the caliper when I got back. The inside pad, (the one riding on the caliper piston) was wafer thin. Barely 1/16th of an inch. Fortunately the disc seems OK, no grooves and no warping I hope. Don't have a dial gauge to check it. I can't believe the tech said nothing when he had the rear wheel off. I guess this is why I prefer to do my own work. Sheesh, If he had called and said I should put new pads in while he had it apart I would have said to do it.
Sorry, just had to vent..............I guess the question now is, should I rebuild the caliper or replace it. It's a '98 with just over 14K. The PO said it had lot's of "garage time" with the owner before him. Do you mechanics out there rebuild or replace? I guess I'll tear it apart tomorrow and see what it looks like inside since it's supposed to rain all day............ Here's a pic of the pad.
I think I'll go with a new complete caliper as I found damage to the piston. Not sure who actually caused it. (see pic). Kinda disappointed that the tech wouldn't examine the brake pads and mention how bad they were.
It was nice to spend the day in the garage..........I found a bad vent line hose and other stuff that should be replaced. Got the turn signals relocated to the forks which I like the look of. (lousy pic at the moment). I'll update later when everything is back together.
I'm totally diggin my wide glide..................
