Default Uneven Brake Wear

Hey guys, I purchased at '01 Night Train a few weeks ago. While on the test ride I could tell the rear brakes needed to be changed. The bike has 22k on it. So, today while changing the rear brakes I was puzzled to find the outer pad in decent shape. The inner pad (closer to the bike) had no pad left, it was wore right down to the metal! Is this normal, or is the plunger on my caliper not functioning properly?

With the caliper hanging and the pads removed and it wiped up good inside on the lips of the pistons and with them pushed all the way in, push slowly on the brake and make sure that all come out at the same time and amount. Take it easy so you do not blow them all the way out. If they all seem equal push them back in and drop the new shoes on and drop the caliper over the rotor. With the the pads pushed back square to the pistons measure on each side and make sure the distances to the rotor are the same. People do all kinds of mods and get the spacers all screwed up and sometimes it's so far off one pad is touching hard. They should be centered. The caliper does not float like most cars. My guess would be the outboard piston is stuck. Must have been brakeing pretty sorry that way since it was throwing all the load on that small bearing surface on the axle spacer

Never seen this issue on a bike, but only because I am lucky I guess. I have seen it on cars several times. You have a piston that is stuck. The caliper may need a rebuild, or it may be just a bit of corrosion on the piston. You will have to take it apart to make sure either way. If this is something you do not have the tools to do, take it to a pro.

Im having the same issue with my 07 custom. On the front wheel the outer pad has much more material than the inner pad. After cleaning with brake parts cleaner and reinstalling the caliper on the bike, it appears that the caliper is not centered over the rotor and the inner pad is still rubbing the rotor slightly and the outer pad seams good. I am thinking of just rebuilding the caliper on the next brake job. Mine has 16kmi on it
