Without being able to see the afr / timing, how would you begin to tune your own bike? By ear?

I'm not sure why the SEST users aren't stepping in here, perhaps look over in the EFI forum. I think the CD has a help file that tells you how to install the software on your PC and how to connect it up to the bike. Pretty simple. HD also sells a training disk, I dunno how good it is.

The current version of SEST includes a smart tune feature, where a DIYer can get a reasonably good tune just by riding on the street. I hear some have had good luck with it.

If you take it to the dealer for a "Dyno Tune" I'm pretty sure what he is going to do is some data runs and Smart Tunes to Synch up your VE tables w/your current configuration ie pipes A/C, etc. Basically simular to the download but more specific to YOUR bike.

I am not sure about this but I don't think the dealer can actually legally do a Performance tune on a street bike since this would involve changing AFR and other factors that would affect EPA performance.

Smart Tune is too easy. Do it yourself.

Dealer. And I'm not towing the company line either.
Everyone thinks that because they have a laptop they can tune bikes.
We use the dyno and after I tune a bike the a/f ratio is pretty consistent
all thtough the rpm range.
plus the dyno gives you the capabilities of seeing the a/f and finding out where it's lean.
I did a guys road king a few weeks ago, 103 stage 4 and I got him over 110 hp and over 113tq.

try doing that in your driveway with a laptop.

save your money on the DT software and get the bike tuned.

That sounds like very good numbers, but on average what do you come up with on 96" Dyna with a stage-1?
