I have a th pipe that I just took exhuast wrap off and they look real bad now from the wrap. Any reccommendation on what to clean with to get chrome looking ok again. Thks
How long did you have the wrap on them ...? I took the wrap off mine after having it on for about a month and it was looking pretty bad .... Mine was only off temporarily, though ....
An exhaust guy I was discussing some work with said that the wrap works as advertised keeping the heat in the pipes ... so well that the extra heat can cause damage to the structure of the steel ... it crystalizes the molecular structure of the steel in the pipes ... therefore, the steel can break when struck sharply .... Not sure how long it takes for that to occur ....
When I had mine unwrapped, I was thinking about putting some 'blu proof' ... read the description of what it is supposed to do, but never ended up using it ... just wrapped my pipes back up without doing anything to them ....
Is the chrome finish itself ruined or is there just residue left from the wrap? If its just residue, fine steel wool used with windex or cleaner/degreaser should do the trick.
Warm them up and spray them with Easy-Off, let it sit overnight, then see if they will clean up. Personally I would never use steel wool on chrome, but that's just my opinion. If it's not good chrome it will lead to rust.
That is the downside to wrapping exhaust. Tends to screw the finish up.
Post some pics of how bad it looks. You might find someone to refinish them. A local chromer won't touch a used exhaust because they say the carbon buildup will contaminate the nickel tank. I do remember talking to a chromer about doing a 'used' exhaust and he said he just plugs up the ends with expandable rubber plugs to seal the pipe.
Wrapping pipes will eventualy destroy them. Once you wrap them thats it there is no going back. You can try painting them but it sounds like you would rather have chrome. Sorry but you'll never get the chrome looking good again.
