Default Is this B.S.?

The last issue of HotBike had a quick write up of these new 'lifetime' oil filters that last forever, improve mpg, increase hp, and lower engine temps. They're $200 a pop.
I call bullsh!t.
Plus, I like the idea of throwing away the old filter with all the gunk in it, not rinsing it out and putting it back on.
It's not really a deal either. Figure 2 oil changes a year (for me), costs <$30. It would take 7 years to even out the cost of this thing. I'll probably have a newer bike by then.

What do you guys think?

Wow! I agree with you. While it is a SWEET looking unit I would be afraid of it vibrating apart on a ride or something OR separating when taking it off and having the base stuck to the bike. I know you aren't supposed to turn them on that tight but in the off chance it gets a bit stuck and then having to use channel locks on the threads to get the base off. UGH! I also have images of me getting my @$$ kicked by the wife the first time she catches me washing it in the kitchen sink...

16 ounces of ferrous metal??? WOW! I know that is just a selling point but I just picture a blown engine with a couple globs of metal fragments in the filter...

+1. What good is a lifetime filter when your life expectancy is suddenly measured in seconds?

I'd never buy one. But you can probably take it off and put it on the next bike if you're worried about the 7yrs it would take you to even out.

I think I agree....a new filter don't cost that much. I never believed in magic parts, new engine in a can, etc.

I even buy a new K&N filter once a year instead of washing it....

Unfortunately, to get more flow, they have to filter less. It's the same thing with air filters including the K&N. You have to weigh the cost of particles going through the engine compared to the hp increase. For oil filters, I'm not sure that's a good idea although if you never have any metal particles going through the engine, you could run without a filter at all. In that case, I suppose you just change the oil!

An oil filter that improves gas mileage well that's a new one , they don't explain how it does it , what a gimmick !

2 bills will buy a lot of K&N filters. They have to be nasty things to clean. I'd probably ruin $200 in clothes and shoes.

I think it is a good idea that you don't have to take the old filter to the parts store/re-cycler with your oil or like so many jack asses who throw the old filter in the garbage. You do know that the filters we use bypass most of the oil, especially after about a 1k miles or so.
A little pricey, but it looks be well made and a good looking unit as well, so it is not just a filter, but an accessory per se.
Let it drain off and clean it with a little solvent that you can dump with your used oil, let it dry and clean up is not a big deal.
