Some say the reason they bought a Dyna is because it had mid controls.
I specifically bought a Dyna because it had forward controls. And mini apes. And extended fork.
The 8 bikes before had mid controls. I always felt cramped. Used the highway bars before, but not in traffic.
No control problems. To each his own. (helmet/no helmet; leather/t-shirt; freedom)

....but I also can't imagine riding with mids.

In the 1600mi I had them, the mids drove me insane.
Always snaggin' my pants leg putting my feet down.
Caught my feet on them picking them up. Felt cramped up. Sucks.

For me, the forward controls have no effect on my ability to run the **** out of this thing,
straights or curves. It ain't a sportbike.

I agree with you Craig...I can ride my WG just as hard with forward controls as I could any other bike with mids.

...In the end, they're all harleys...they're all big, heavy, and none of them are lightning....
.................................................. ....
...but if you really want to ride like you're at the track, I'm not sure why a harley would be anyone's first choice to begin with.

...you buy the one that makes you feel like you're one with it when you sit on it.

Good job! That is why mid controls are better. In an accident like that you will mess up your ankles, knees and hip sockets due to compression injuries, if you have forward controls. Granted forward controls look cool. Plus I can ride farther with Mid-Controls. It seems to me when I had forward controls it shifted my hips enough to cause discomfort after 500 miles. I have ridden 1000 mile days before with minimal discomfort. I have to admit with getting older, I get stiff and sore a little sooner, even though Harley saddles have gotten a lot more comfortable.

Can't respond to something that unspecific...

What I will say is, my comments were based on my own experience and opinion.... everyone's got opinions, and one opinion isn't anymore right or wrong than any other. That would be like telling someone who doesn't like a certain food or drink that they're wrong for liking it. That's just silly.

Rode a friends Bob with the forward controls and have to say that i felt awkward and off balance...seemed like there would be a hard time getting your feet down quickly if needed. That isn't to say that highway pegs might not come in handy for long hauls...although i think they mess up the looks of the front of the bike. Guess i'll stick with the mids...they work for me.

I put forwards on my last bike (a '94 suzuki intruder 1400) and when I got my Dyna I just couldn't get comfortable with the mid mounts. I replaced them with forwards and I like the ride a lot better. It all comes down to riding style and personal preference. Now I have to do something about these uncomfortable buckhorn bars....

My Bob has Mids, but I rented a Sporty Custom with forwards. I like'em both actually. However, it is cheaper to install hiway pegs than forward controls. Besides, I think for the type of riding I do (lots in town) I prefer mids.

However, the point was made in a different thread...and I think it is a good one...that if you have your feet on the forwards and have to react quicky, it could be a problem.

What wasn't stated is that the same is true if you have mids and forward controls and your feet are on the mids...it works both ways.

I think the diffference is that if you have forward controls and are using th mids, you'r just changing positions for a little while to a more upright posture and your position is such that all you have to do is move your foot forward and you're in control. Whereas if you're on the fwd hwy pegs you're leaned back with your legs extended and the move backwards to get to the brake or shifter would be a much more difficult transition. At least it is for me.

Good Luck

I have mid-controls on my Lowrider and would never change them,I like being on top of everything especially in a crisis situation you can react much faster.I have highwaypegs when I want to stretch out for the long haul.I never did like the looks of the brake pedal sticking out past the engine either,it spoils the clean lines.Besides who wants to lie down while riding anyway, you're liable to miss something exciting by falling asleep at the handlebar.

I've always preferred mid-controls (disclaimer: I'm 5'6"). Not only do I feel a little more in control, I can stand up on the pegs if necessary if I'm coming up on a really gnarly bump. However, my Lowrider has the highway pegs which are nice when I'm out on the open road and want to stretch a little. So I have the best of both worlds.
