Default What is your average miles per gallon?

Last weekend I rode 370 miles on a road trip, with lots of backroad and some interstate riding. It was hot (90 degrees in the afternoon). With my Stage 1 upgrade (SE A/C, SE 49-State Slip-Ons, Download), I averaged 46 miles / gallon.

I average really close to 45 on average. I wonder if the size of the person has the same type of effect as the windshield/two up. That is if the OP was a small guy light/short/narrow, he should get better mileage. XEDs with Screamin Eagle II slipons.

Step 1
Fill up your tank at a gas station and write down the mileage that the odometer says before you leave. An example would be your odometer says 31,000 miles. Make sure to fill the tank, not just get some gas. Place the paper in a safe place where you will know where it is when you need it next.

Step 2
Drive the vehicle until you need to put more gas in it. It doesn't have to be empty, but you will want to put some mileage on it to get a good average.

Step 3
Fill the tank up again and write down how many gallons it took to fill it up. Let's say you need 10 gallons of gas to completely fill the tank.

Step 4
Write down the new mileage on your paper. Subtract the first mileage (from Step1) from the new mileage and write down the answer. Your new mileage is 31, 200. Take the new mileage reading of 31,200 and subtract the first mileage reading of 31,000. You are left with 200 miles.

Step 5
Divide the number of miles you drove by the number of gallons of gas it took to fill the tank. The answer will be your miles per gallon. Divide the 200 miles you drove by the 10 gallons of gas you used; 200 divided by 10 equals 20. You are getting 20 miles to the gallon in our example.
Where'd you get the 10 gallon tank ...? Must be stretched ... about 2" or so ...

Better than watching the fuel gauge. When (A) gets to 150 I start lookin for gas.
But in your case, with your average of 57mpg, you wont have to start looking for gas til around 260 miles per tank.
Ditto ... use the trip meter ...

Been getting between about 37 - 43 MPG ... used to get higher, stock, but even with 100% highway riding, still don't get much better than mid-40's ... at least for about the past year or so ....

I have been tracking my mileage now for awhile. I always insert the gas pump about an inch into the tank and fill till the pump shuts off. I don't put in a few extra squirts or try to fill up to the opening. I write down the mileage from the trip odometer and then reset it to zero. When I get home I use a calculator to figure mileage. My miles per gallon has bounced around from a low of 32 mpg to a high of 49.5 depending of where and how I'm riding and the wind (which we get a lot of around here). 75 mph interstate trips will be different from 60 mph two lane and a strong tail wind will up the mileage a bit. I'm not overly concerned with mpg because I usually try to stop and fill up at 100 miles or so depending on where I am and where I need to go. I'm riding an 09 Low Rider with V&H Big Shot Staggered, SE Stage one AC and a PC-V ECM. I ride one up with a windshield and saddlebags.

I have the 02 wideglide, 95"/cams,211s and do my mileage every fill-up. If I'm doing 80 on the freeway I get 39-41 on the back roads I get 43. If I really baby it I get 47. When stock, i got as much as 52, 2 up on the back roads. My buddy's wife is 100lbs and gets 63 on her 05 super glide (but that doesn't count)

Your mileage test was faulty!

As pointed out in the other thread, due to differences in topping off from one fill-up to the next, using just one tankful to calculate your fuel economy is bound to lead to an erroneous conclusion, as your claim would seem to indicate. Additionally you have left this calculation to a third party, and have not provided any data (other than this third party's supposed calculation) to support your claim: no miles ridden, no gallons consumed.

To get meaningful fuel economy data, you must average the figures over many fill-ups.

In 1700 miles I have averaged 45mpg with my stock motor.

Same here ... my mileage was quite a bit higher stock ... then it dropped when I installed a Dobeck fuel optimizer ... actually went up a little when I switched to the Thunder Max ... I assume because the motor is more efficient, now ....

If you think about it, though, it makes sense ... going from Air-to-Fuel ratio of 14.6 to 13.x ... MPG should drop by a little less than 10% ....
