I'm not certain the belt ever gets to that lip. I am reminded of an article I read a few years ago about railway carriage wheels. Apparently they don't need lips on them, they are only there to make us public feel good and convince us the carriages won't come of the rails!
In the case of a Harley belt drive, the lips on the rear pulley align the belt on the front pulley. I have recently changed from wide to narrow belt and the rear pulley is spaced differently, and has shifted where the belt runs on the front pulley.
You know what, as many times as we have had this discussion, I really do not care what you are certain of at this point. I have played with enough of these over time and always see the same result when everything is aligned and running smoothly. No it should not actually ride on the lip. it is there to prevent the belt from rubbing the case on that side if things are not aligned properly. Good grief.

So you're saying that a 150 ton vehicle that is riding on rails DOESN'T need a lip on the inside of the trucks, is going to make a curve a 60 mph? Check you physics!!! Last time I checked Locomotives don't have steering wheels!

As long as my occasional inspection of the belt edges say its ok, on I go. pefection you can try for but basically it's just a tough machine and there to be used. Happytrails to everyone!
