This is on a friend's 04 Road King. He had a shop put a new tire on, and things were good until the drive belt came REALLY loose. I looked at it and saw that the nut was bottomed out on the axle. We got the belt tightened up a bit, and took it back to the shop. When we got there, they admitted that when they put it back together originally, they had a washer left over. They pulled the nut off, added a washer, and put it back together.
Also, when they tightened the belt and tightened the axle, the right side adjusting cam (as your looking at the back tire from the back) is away from the stop/boss, while the left is against it. My friend measured the clearance between the wheel and swingarm, and said the wheel was centered in the swingarm, but I don't see how.
So... what's the deal with this mystery washer? I looked in my 04 FSM and it doesn't show a washer in there. The only thing we can think of is that when he first got the bike, he had to have a new tire put on it, and he had a bit wider one put on. We figure the shop that did it might have put the washer in to shim the wheel to one side for clearance. (Different shop than the above.)
