Save yourself some trouble. New gaskets are cheap compared to the trouble of having to do it over again the right way.

Joe is right.

They only leak if you abuse it, I have re-used mine several times, if you have the one with the orange ring inside and tighten it down properly there is no reason for it to fail.
The key on re-using any gasket that is not an adhesive applied gasket, is to finger snug in the star pattern, then tighten in the star pattern so everything stays even throughout.
Anything that requires a star pattern to tighten should never be tightened all the way one bolt at a time, always in stages.

I just bought a new gasket for my primary cover. I need to replace my cover because its cracked. The gasket has a metal insert..therefor it will bend slightly to conform to the two parts going together. The heat from running will slightly expand it, making a better seal. I can not see re-using that type of gasket.

+1 I agree. I just recently did some motor work and some primary work. I reused my outer primary gasket and my derby cover gasket with no problems at all. Just do like 8541hog says and you'll have no problems.I have also reused my cam cover gasket, my trans cover gasket and my inner primary gasket all with no leaks.

I reused mine a couple of times, no leaks at all. Torque properly in the correct sequence and make sure the gasket is clean before reinstalling.

I've had my orange silicone and aluminum chrome outer primary cover off and back on twice using the same gasket without a single leak.

Don't abuse the gasket and make sure it's spotless when putting it back on. Follow the manual for torque sequence and ft. lbs and you should be fine.
