Sometimes, I fill my tank a little too full. As it is inconvenient (impossible) to dispose of the gas once it is dispensed, I have an over full tank. Fuel is usually just at the metal insert in the fuel inlet. Although, overnight, I get fuel stains running down the middle of the tank AND it warps the rubber/plastic strip that runs down the center of the tank. Is this a defective cap OR do I just need to be careful when filling the tank? I note that the gas pump will shut off when the fuel tank is full but it is often too late/too full.
I've gotten better at that too. Yesterday, I filled it at night and I didn't see the fuel was right there; fuel stains this morning. Got a long ride on Saturday so it won't be full much longer. I usually under-fill to be safe as I get pretty good distance on the large tank.

Do as Mikeurg states above,
Put the bike on the kick stand, (once you pay and the cap/s are off), stand the bike straight up to level, adjust legs for the hot spots
Always take off sunglasses
If the pump has one of those eviro type plungers (made for cars/trucks) on it, lift the plunger with your opposite hand, donât just push the thing in the tank until its starts pumping, back out the nozzle (after releasing the upward plunger) to check level, now and then near the top of the fill. If you know how many miles are on the tank, in time watching the galâs go up you will know when your near the top.
Now, take the cap off the top of the pump, twist it on, then hang up the pump handle, turn the key-on and remember to kick-back the kick-stand before you take off.
You got a 7 yr old gas cap/s gaskets, get new ones from the motor company if stock, if using a custom type make sure you know where to get re-placement gaskets.
