i have a 1999 fxdx it has 30000 miles in the mornings the bike starts just fine and after sittin at work. if i make a stop on my way home it takes about 10 to 15 mins. for it to start it turns over really slow some times it will drain the battery. does anyone think it could be timeing, if so can it be adjusted on this bike. i would be grateful for any help thanks mike

I'm thinking more along the lines of a heat related issue. Perhaps some heat shielding around the starter could improve it. I'd also make sure that all electrical contacts between the battery and starter are bright and shiney and that the battery cables are corrosion free.

It could be that the starter is worn out . That's a pretty common thing on a Harley of that age .

I'd check the voltage on the battery. You'd think it would crank over easier once warmed up but if your battery is on the blink it's probably draining as you ride. Maybe you got some vapor lock going on if it's really hot where you live. I'm not sure if that would make it crank slower or not though.

Do you have a volt meter? If so put it on the battery terminals before you start it in the morning. It should read 12.5 - 13.5 volts.
Then start the engine and check the voltage again. With the engine running, rev it up to 2000 -2500 and hold it there a couple of seconds: did the volt reading go up? It should read about 14 with the RPMs up.
If the voltage reading is good then your electrical system is fine. The next place I would look is your starter. See the single wire plug on your starter solenoid? Pull it out of the solenoid and put a test light in it. Turn the key on and hit the starter button:It should light.
Now disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Then take the three screws out of the end of the solenoid and remove the end piece. See the round piece in the middle? Pull it out, there is a spring on the end of it, don't drop it. Now look at the copper band behind the round piece you just removed: should be shiny, if not take a file to it. Now look inside the solenoid at the two contacts and if they are rough, spotted or pitted take the end of the file and scrap them till smooth. Reassemble and see if it starts stronger than before.
If it's not the battery, charging system or starter solenoid, describe the symptoms again please.
