wierd thing - for me anyways
trying to start bike ('91 FXR ) solenoid clicks , starter turns engine over almost. then just clicking solenoid. battery is charged (checked ) and good (checked) so a flat battery is ruled out
funny thing is it was ok the other day but yesterday no go
have put on a new battery with the same results
seems to me the starter is needing more power than the batterys' got
the terminals get quite warm
i seem to remember reading a thread along these lines before
Check your cable connections , sounds like a loose ground or something is corroded a bit if the battery is holding a decent charge and the cables heat up like that .
Quit whining...It`s a 20 year old machine for cryin out loud...
Remove, clean and re install all electrical connections between the battery and solenoid, and also the connections between the starter relay and solenoid.
You might want to take a look inside the solenoid to be sure the contacts are ok.
woo to old bikes, I got a 30 year old one that im trying to finish restoring, the hard work is done, and i didnt have do it, but i have to do the electrical work,
at least im having fun with it though, learning alot
I've had the same problem with my '86 883/1200 Sporty. I think it might be the cheap-*** EverStart WalMart batteries I've been running...? I am in the process of installing a high torque (1.4kw) starter and fatter battery cables and getting a battery with 310 cold cranking amps (as recommended by Debrix, where I got the starter). This is my last resort before installing compression release valves!! I'll let you know if this fixed mine when I get the installations done next pay day.
