Unhappy Battery or Starter.??

Tried starting my 2005 Wide Glide Saturday. It has been sitting quite awhile. (I usually ride my Road Glide.) Wanted to spruce it up and maybe sell it this spring. Anyway..... Power on, all the lights light up, but all I got was rapid clicking sounds.

Took off the seat and was able to jump start it with a portable charger. I thought maybe the Battery Tender had come loose and the battery lost charge, so I pulled the battery and put it on a charger overnight. Sunday, the battery was reading 13+ volts. Put in back in the bike, but still got the rapid "clicking".

Is this symptom just an old dead battery, or maybe the starter is going/gone. Hate to go buy a new battery and still have the clicking, and I hate to take it to a dealer or indie just for a battery.

Thoughts, ideas, and/or advise would be appreciated.

Thanks.

DD

Take your battery to a local auto store and get it tested. If it fails then you obviously need a new one, if it is OK then you may have a starter problem, however there is a thread here in the Evo section which may be helpful.

If the battery is holding a charge and you have 13+ volts on the battery, I would suspect the starter/solenoid is bad.
I would also check to make sure the battery cables to the starter are tight i.e., you have a good ground and hot connection.

I don't know if these starters have a replaceable solenoid?

If there is room, you could try and connect jumper cables directly to the starter and see if it turns over..That would rule out the starter itself being bad.

I wouldn't think there is room to connect directly to the starter lol

Rapid clicking of the starter solenoid is a classic symptom of low voltage (weak battery, or poor electrical connection somewhere in the circuit).

It is not a bad starter motor.

Charge and load test battery.

Clean all connections on battery, ground connection, solenoid and starter motor.
