Forwards are easy and fun to put on by yourself, just take your time, follow the directions with your kit, after there on , take it easy untill you get use to them....it don't take long. Have fun!
I purchased the kit from Harley. I think that's the best way to go. Then do the job yourself. It's not hard. You don't have to remove or loosen the exhaust.
Make sure you chase all the threads in all of the mounting holes before attaching any bolts. The powder coating from the factory clogs up the threads.
And remember to lube, lube and lube at least once a year all moving parts with anti-seize.
I've had the kit on my 04 FXDX since 04. Only problem was forgetting to lube more.
Good luck.
Just re-reading this thread and a quick word of caution based on my personal experiences. Good advise you had on lubing everything but... believe it or not anti-seize is _NOT_ a lubricant and should not be substituted for grease on moving parts. Anti-seize was designed to prevent corrosion between parts and is not designed to be used to prevent wear between moving metals. For that you need grease!
Prior to buying, hit the website for Chicago Harley. I believe its www.chicagoharley.com. Long story short you can buy any HD part there around 20% discounted.
I have purchased 2 sets of forward controls and put both of them on myself, not difficult.
