Default started forward control intsall question

So I started my install tonight. Did not crack open primary as recommended to be easier. Everything is going smooth, ran into one problem that I didnt think I would have any issues with. Im having trouble putting the new brake shaft on to the brake lever. The new long one has a curve to it, does the the curve go towards the frame or away from frame. Ive tried both way but cant get it to line up close enough to put pin in. So can i get some help on how to get brake shaft on. I still have to cut old shift shaft out then Im done. Thanks for all the help so far.

if you have the linkage screwed into the master cylinder i believe the curve goes away from the bike so to speak and once in the slot youll have to move the brake lever a little to get lined up.

Thanks for info. Messed around for with it a little more last night before I went to bed. Still could not get brake rod in. Seems to me that this is the easy part. Got rod screwed in to master but doesnt go into brake lever. Its just hitting my exhuast pipes

may need to loosen the amount you have it screwed into the rear master cylinder.
Just thought of something, are your pipes for mid controls or both forwards and mids?

Dont know if pipes are for forward or mids. Bought bike used had thunderheader on it with mid controls. Do some pipes get in the way of forwards?

i'm going to be doing a swap on my 09 superglide custom in like a week or two. i'm really interested in how you make out with this and any problems like the one discussed here you encounter. i've read on here about doing it without pulling the primary but i don't know if i'll go that route or do it the "right way". i'm not a master mechanic by any means but am totally comfortable doing exhaust and intake and other small mods. on a scale of 1-10, 1 being a novice level and 10 being a master mechanic, how would you rate the task of putting on the forward controls??

If you plan on tackling this on your own, be sure you have a factory service manual. With that said, I would rate this install, including removing the Primary, as a 6-7. Only because there is more then just remove and replace. You’ll need to make a tool in order to loosen/tighten the clutch/flywheel assy. Then make sure everything is assembled back to factory specs; that’s where the service manual comes in. Maybe someone else might think its easier or harder… just my experience.

Got it figured out. Just had to take a step away and relax. No problems with the brake rod. Fit good, I actually just had it sitting alittle off even though I looked at it a million time telling me it was right. So the only thing left to do is cut out old shaft. So far the install has been pretty straight forward and Im no wrench. Im sure it would be alot harder pulling the primary. I did have to loosen exhuast to get old brake pedal and footrest off. If you dont want to cut shaft out I believe someone in here said that there is a cap but I dont have a part # but Im sure somone will say. I dont see a prob with leaving shaft in.

i think i will probably go the route of cutting the shaft out when it comes time to do it. i know i saw another thread on here talking about how to do it that way so i'll have to re check that thread for sure. I will probably still end up on here asking a few questions though.

I would definately cut the shaft out.
There have been some folks that tied it down and had pretty good luck, others had it get in the way and cause a shifting problem.
