Lightbulb POWER COMMANDER for dummies

Seriously; I have an 07 FXD stage 1 with stock SE slipons with Big City Thunder Baffles installed, I'm thinking of putting a fuel management system on the bike. Is this a "do it yourself project" or is it something that needs to be installed by the dealer.......................and what will I actually gain from this mod

any info would help
thx.

Yes do it yourself. It's not allways easy but I've done a few of them. It really won't get you much in the way of power but what it'll do is keep the bike from running lean and because of that it'll run cooler and it'll be more responsive too.

If I go order a Power Commander from Fuel Moto, and they set up the unit...what *exactly* are they doing? My understanding is that the PC units are fairly plug and play. I guess all that depends on what air fllter intake I'm using, my exhaust, etc, right?

Thanks

The Power commander (PC) is going to alter the signal coming from the ECM to the fuel injectors and make the motor run richer .

They will program the PC to match your bike accessories, based on what works on a number of similar bikes. The ECU and PC use a bunch of sensors and sophisticated rules (so called MAP) to determine when and how much fuel to squirt and when to light it off. For the Harley, the optimum performance depends on what kind of accessories you have installed. Put different accessories on and you degrade the performance.

The PC tries to get you back the performance you lost when adding the accessories as well as boost power a bit.

Go for it! The most difficult part of the install is fitting that bird's nest of wires back under the seat. Bike will run cooler and stronger all around. Well worth it.

I got a used Power Commander off Ebay. Kind of a bummer trying to find the right MAP. They have tons of them for some bikes and not so many choices for a 06 Street Bob.

I had the same problem. I have an 06 Super Glide and there aren't many maps for it. I just chose the one that was the closest. I still haven't had it tuned but plan to soon.
It's certainly do it yourself. It wasn't a hard installation. Like someone already said, the hard part is cramming all the wiring in there. I would be sure to put some dielectric grease it the big connectors as well. If water gets in there from washing the bike or rain, it'll cause you a lot of problems. Trust me, I've had those problems with mine. Other than that, you might want to buy a long USB cord, plug it into the PC3 and run it up through the hole under the seat. I coil mine there and tie wrap it to the other wiring. Makes it much easier if you need to plug your laptop into it to make adjustments, load new maps, etc. You won't have to get in there and try to get the cord plugged in. It's a pretty easy installation. If the one you buy is used and doesn't come with instructions you can download them from the website as well as check out the maps and videos they have there. If you run into any installation problems, post your issues here and someone will surely be glad to help.
Also, if you buy it used on ebay or somewhere like that, be sure to check the website to be sure you have the latest firmware loaded. I bought mine on ebay and there were updates available online for it.

BTW: I just realized you didn't mention which fuel controller you were looking at...the above pertains to the PC3.

Are the PC units Mac friendly? If I do get one, I want to be sure it works with my computer!
