Question Not ANOTHER intake questioon.....

So, there are lots of threads on intakes & types, PCs, pipes etc, and they all have good info, but my somewhat small mind is drowning in info overload..

I dont have the luxury of being able to do stage one as a single mod, I'll have to go bit by bit.

1st item I can afford is an intake (mainly cause it free from a friend )

so my first question is: After fitting the intake, do I HAVE to remap/adjust/tweak the EFI, or will the bike run ok until I can get my PCV (about 2 months away). Will I notice any significant difference, or will the bike just breathe better and perhaps run a little cooler?

I understand the Stage 1 benefits result from intake+pipes+PC, so I guess my concern is will I be doing any harm going piece at a time or not?

Also, is there a particular thread/website I should go look at?

TIA!

I would think that the ECU would adjust for the new intake and nothing further would be needed at this time, as far as performance gains they will be minimal so you might notice a little, but don't expect too much.

The safest thing is to hold onto the intake until you can afford a tuner module. The bike will likely run hotter as it will run leaner.

You will notice the free flow more at higher rpms, but not much below 4000rpm. Without a tuner this is more of a style thing.

If you must have the style, then go for it and if you notice hesitation or other driveability problems, yank it off. Some here have put duct tape over part of the free flow filter to make it flow less, and ran it until they had a tuner.

The ECU should adjust for the filter in closed loop, but the HD engine will run all day at 15 AFR and you probably wouldn't know it. Running this lean puts extra wear an tear on the engine, but usually not enough to worry about for a short period. You should be just fine for cruising but I would not suggest riding it agressively or long term WOT unless you cover some of the filter.

Interesting thread. I put pipes on, along with a V&H Fuelpak. I've heard/read both sides of opinions. Some saying just changing pipes don't require a fuel management/tuner; others saying no matter what if you change the pipes you need a tuner or re-map. Setting up the Fuelpak doesn't give an option for stock air cleaner. I guess when my Heavy Breather gets here in a week or so (hopefully sooner) I'll see how it runs. Right now it runs good, so I'm expecting it to still be g2g, possibly more efficient.

I've heard more about the importance of a tuner when changing the intake than exhaust.

Ask your dealer.

You should be good with the intake only, I would do the tuner before or the same time as the pipes.
