I have a 2005 Superglide. It developed a leak in the primary near the drain plug after it fell over in my garage. I figured it was either a damaged gasket or the primary cover was cracked.
Long story short, I thought this would be a good time to buy a chrome primary cover. Got it today and got to looking at it and discovered that there is a notch around the hole where the derby cover goes. I figure it's for an O-ring type gasket. I never noticed on my old primary if it has this same notch. I usually use a paper gasket that covers the entire hole. The guy at the parts dept. at one of our area dealerships wasn't sure if the stock cover has this notch either.
Anyone know anything about whether or not the same gasket will fit in this situation? I didn't want to remove the old gasket until I'm ready to make the change because I'm still riding the bike.
My original Derby cover had a groove in it for an O-ring type gasket. Harley has since re-designed the gasket to be a flat type gasket that has a marking, "This side to outside", or something to that effect. This newly designed gasket will work on both the grooved Derby covers and the covers that are flat. I have used this gasket on both the original Derby cover and a flat replacement cover and have had no problems with it leaking. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the replies. I have since removed the derby cover and gasket and found the same groove in my original cover. I got the flat gasket to replace the old one. About to start on it now.
I'm pretty sure they discontinued the quad ring.
We use the paper/metal gasket part # 25416-99c
sometimes if the bike still has the quad ring i re-use it along with
the paper one.
