Jony, I had the very same problem a few weeks ago on my Dyna. To cut a long story short I metered it all out and it turned out to be the little starter relay by the fuse panel. You may have the same problem, it only costs a few Ł (bucks to you guys) so worth trying before you go delving anywhere else
it happened again after i filled up the gas tank, 4th time in a row. then the next day when i left for work i tried to start and i swear the battery just flat out died, tuned the key off then back on and it started up, haha. k gonna search ebay for starter relays, thanks derv
How old is the battery? If like you said it set for years you might need a new battery. They generally seem to last about four years if well taken care of. I had similiar symptoms on a 2005 Sporty that sat for about two years. Replaced the battery and it was fine. Do the voltage test in the manual (it tells you what the voltage should be if fully charged). The same symptom could be caused by starter relay, or you could have a combination of battery and the starter relay, or even the ignition switch.
batt is 3yrs old, ordered a new starter relay and new spark plugs. went to start bike to leave wk and i got absolutely nothing after i turned the key. i thought it was a done deal and i needed a jump or a tow, then tried again about 5min later and it started right up, what the shiat!!!!!!!!!!! starter relay coming on fri, only about ten bucks so we'll try that first and the plugs and I'm gonna test the voltage tomorrow. i know its suppose to be at 12.8 just sitting and 14+ when I'm revving it
k think i figured out the prob. took the battery out and what do u know the other end of the neg batt cable is barely on and the washer is almost completely disintegrated. i finally did this b/c every time the bike wouldn't start or have any power i would tap on the battery then i would have power so i figured something was loose. so i ordered a starter relay and plugs kinda for nothing, $35 lesson, not bad

You didn't tell us that bit. If you had, everyone here would have told you what the problem was before you went buying relays etc
that tapping the battery came after i posted this thread, i started doing that the day before the bike completely died. i guess the bike shakes/vibrates so damn much if the battery tray is loose it'll eventually shake the battery enough to where the neg cable will shake loose to the point where u can unscrew it by hand. starts right up now
Glad you found the problem. I was betting on the battery based on what you posted. Okay, now it was just a connection. But at 3 yrs old and it has not been getting charged properly because of the poo4 connection. Use a voltmeter and check the battery. The manual tells you what it should be. You can put it on a battery tender and charge it up to speed. But at 3 yrs old if the voltage tests low and you are using it for everyday commutes and cannot afford to be stranded, buy a new glass mat battery and be done with it.
glass mat batt? i have a batt tester, i was getting 12.9 idling, then 14.8 when i revved it up, i think its cool, planning on selling it soon, it was my dads so now its really my moms, i can give her the money then get back on a jap bike
