Default I screwed up!

I got a new braided brake line so I decided to go ahead and put her on. I tell you I learn something new with my Harley every day! No bleeding like a car as I was told.. NO!! You need a bleeder pump? OMG I had no idea and now I have no front brakes. I was out there pumping and pumping and still no pressure, release, tighten and pump pump still nothing, call a friend and hes says you need a bleeder pump.... dang it!!! How much is that going to cost me now?

Mad and depressed!!! Donnie

You've got mail, Naz.

This is no big deal. All you need do is gently tap the brake fluid resevoir with a platic screwdriver handle to work to bubbles out of the cylinder. I had the same trouble and got this tip from someone here, and it worked flawlessly.

I just noticed the flaw that I think Lazy noticed: It's not "release, tighten, pump pump", it's "squeeze handle, open bleed screw a bit, squeeze-and-hold, tighten bleeder screw, release handle, repeat". If you have the same problem I did (and that many others have), you'll have air in the master cylinder valving that will prevent you from ever getting pressure. To handle this, do the following:

1. remove master cylinder cover.
2. tap master cylinder with a plastic screwdriver handle in the area where the brake line attaches, and watch the bubbles rise. When they stop, then...
3. go through a bleeding cycle, and repeat this sequence from step 1.

Get a set of speed bleeders as well. They have a check valve in them so all you have to do is loosen them a quater turn and pump your lever a few times and you're all set. I have some on my Suzuki and it was a snap to bleed the hydrolic clutch. http://www.speedbleeder.com/

I used no pump or vaccum when I changed out my brake line. Yes, it did take forever, but, I certainly didn't need one. What I could have used was an extra set of hands.

I bought one of those pump bleeder from Autozone for about 25 bucks. A wise investment. Used it on several bikes and cars. It works the nuts.

The really inexpensive solution is to buy about 3 feet of clear tubing that will fit snugly over the bleeder screw. Open the screw and suck on the tubing. You bought 3 feet so that you will be able to see the fluid coming before it gets to your mouth. Close the screw, empty the tubing and repeat the process until there are no more air bubbles coming from the caliper/wheel cylinder. Another way to accomplish the same thing is to put the end of the tubing (use a shorter piece) into a small glass jar and submerge it in some fluid. Now you can pump the master cylinder all you want and no air can enter the system. Keep the master full and pump 'till there are no bubbles. It only takes one person this way but having a buddy, wife or child work the master cylinder on a bike or car sure makes it easier.
