Default Lowering A 2010 Wide Glide

First let me apologize, I started a similar thread last night but didn't research enough and didn't ask the right questions.

I was originally looking at the burly slammer rear shocks for my bike (I like the price and look) but . I would prefer to leave the forks alone and just change out the rear shocks. From what I have read the 10.5 rear shock length of the burly's is to low by itself, you would also have to lower the front. (don't know if that is true or not just what I have read)

I am now looking at the progressive 412's they are 11 inches and I have read that plenty of people just throw them on and don't touch the front.

Personally I still like the look and price of the burly but don't want my bike to look or ride bad. Thanks very much.

if ya want to lower the rear and not lower the front its ok.. it "recommended" that you lower the front too but its not a big deal. the only real no no is lowering the front and not the back. as far as whether or not 11" 412's are the right way to go, well i suggest you use the search function and go through the archives in this forum. LOTS of info awaits you to help you make the right purchase

I coughed up for 11" progressives. I wanted lower but also like the look of the chrommed jacket shocks. If I needed to drop the front I was going to raise the sliders in the trees, before I buy a spring kit. I have not noticed any negative handling with the stock front end set up (besides the clunky factory feel). 10.5 inches seems too low in my opinion. I drag my mid mount pegs quite often and I have bumped the exhaust twice(rush slip ons). The ride is a bit firmer and I weigh 160 pounds. I went out with the wife on the back and did not bottom out once...270 pounds with both of us. I don't run a belt guard so I have no issues with belt rub, but I think the instructions tell you that this may need to be modified...hope this helps

I just used 1" blocks. Since my wife rides her own and i wont be riding 2-up. I just removed the rear footpegs. Had to make a bracket for the belt guard but thats pretty simple stuff.. Im 230lbs so i was worried about any kind of tearing the fender or belt guard up. Well i set the shocks on 4 and have had 0 problems so far.....

Thanks for the info, I think I am leaning toward the 412's. I would just get blocks but I want black shocks eventually so might as well get two birds with one stone.

I would recommend putting the bike on your m/c jack, removing both shocks with a floor jack under the rear wheel and moving the swingarm to where it would be if you had the 11" shocks on it. Then move the swingarm up a bit to simulate where it would be under compression and check your clearances-belt to guard and frame, gaurd to fender, brake caliper to fender, etc.
