Default 1000 Mile Service

Well I will soon be approaching the 1000 mile first service and I normally do ALL work myself for anything I own. The salesman recommended that I let them at least perform the first 1000 mile service.

They want 255 for this service.....Should I let them do the first one or what? Are they going to do anything that I cannot perform at home.

Look at the back of your manual, it lists everything that needs to be done at the 1k. If you can perform those tasks yourself, then by all means go for it. It will be some good bonding time with your bike. My 1k was around $350 once it was done....

Will doing this myself impact anything with the warranty?

Do it yourself and save the money for some doo dads! And no, it doesn't do anything to the warranty. Just keep all records of what you did along with the receipts for the supplies.

Dealers do an amazing job at scaring people into letting them do the service for these bikes. Admittedly I almost let them do mine and then I was like screw that. By the time I were to pay for all the service every 1000, 2500 ,5000, 10,000 miles (I live in the desert where they say we have harsh conditions hence needing service more often) I could damn near replace the entire motor if needed!

If the warranty was good for the entire life of the bike, I'd let them do it. But it's not, so do it yourself. The money you spend having them do routine maintenance is robbery.

I agree and like most things from the stealership 250-350 bucks for just basic service is a rip off

I agree with what everyone else has said, you can do the work yourself, use a service manual, document it and save yourself the $. Having said that, I went ahead and had the initial service done at HD (for my ZX12R as well) just for the peace of mind knowing they might find something that needed adjustment that I might overlook. Or that they would have a specialized tool that I didn't have. This then gave me 5k to study the service manual, find out if I needed any tools ect and to just get familure with the bike even though its not my first. But if you feel confident that you have the necessary parts and personal knowledge by all means do it yourself, it won't have any effect on your warrantry unless you miss something that needs attention. Good luck.

I am also approching the 1000 mile service and had decided to have my local cycle shop do the work the service guy there is a retired Harley factory Service Tech plus they are a short drive away while the Harley dealer is over 80+ miles away. Since I had that thought I notice there is a factory recall coming soon on my front fork springs so I guess I will be going to my dealer anyway so may just let them do the first service at the same time.

I just bought a new Dyna Wide Glide too. I always let them do the first 1,000 service incase they find a lemon and the belts usually need adjusting. But since this isn't my first Harley I told them I would buy the bike if they did the first service for free (after negotiations are almost over). The dealership bought off on it which they have every time I have bought a bike. I use it as a one up on them when buying a new bike. They will throw the first service in for free if you ask 99% of the time. After that do it yourself, they want way too much money.

My 2010 Wide Glide needed the steering head bearings tightened on it's 1000 mile check-up. I took the bike in dirty & covered with bugs. They washed it and shined her back up. I supplied the oil I wanted to use in my bike. They checked the primary chain adjuster and had the side cover off. The bike ran much quieter after they got done with it, so whatever they did, was good.
