I'm thinking about getting hte HD "Rigid Lockable Saddle Bags" for my Street Bob. My question: How hard are they to remove for those times you need to get to the wheel or want to service the back end?
I've never purchased or installed HD bags so apologies if this is a stupid question.
It's a pain in the a$$ using the bolts provided by HD. You need 3 hands to keep from dinging chrome or paint. A better solution is to cut some 3/8" threaded rod to length and use a JAM nut to secure the QD backrest docking points (if you use them). This leaves four threaded studs sticking out from the fenders that you mount the bag to. When you feel like going bareback just pull the bags and pop on a chrome spacer and acorn nut. This way I can remove or install my rigid bags in under a minute.
Maddghost has a good write-up of this in the *HOW TO * under fifty bux* thread. Look for posts 1252, 1253, and 1254, or just search for 'threaded rod'
Bought and had 'em installed today (didn't see RatBob's message until afterwards). I'm not 100% confident I made the right choice. They obviously aren't watertight and there's no way to drain them. Also, the retaining wire that holds the lid in place when it's opened doesn't look like it's going to be able to take any kind of abuse. On the other hand, the bags don't look half bad and they've turned my S'Bob into a good commuter bike.
You really can't go too wrong with those bags, they follow the dyna lines, very very well, they have a good rich leather appearance to em, and their size, they can store a decent amount of gear. Yea the downside is their not fiberglass, so moisture resistance is different, but I thought I saw a drain hole in mine for drainage.

Can you guys elaborate on these concerns? What is it about the bags that lead you to conclude they aren't waterproof? From the pics it appears the lids overlap the body of the bag and there are gasket/seals around the opening. Touring bike bags haven't been fiberglass for years either - I assume these are the same abs-type plastic?

Thanks
I have a set of rigid HD bags I got from a forum member. They aren't waterproof. The lid does not seal when closed.
If you were really concerned with water draining, just drill a small hole in each corner of the bottom of the bag.
