Can anyone tell me where the converter is located in the headpipe on a 09 Fat Bob. Is in the collector or between the ox bung and the collector on each pipe? I have Yamaha with a cat and it's obvious where it is.
I spotted a spare pipe for sale and was thinking of buying it to cut up and remove the converter to reduce the heat on my leg. Is this worth the time?
You will be happy to know that there is no CAT in the 09 FXDF. Normally it would be where it goes into the collector just before the mufflers. Why, something about HD being allowed an EPA exemption etc.
WARNING...I'm sure you will get a lot of responses saying this is not true...so do what I did...google it...and if still in doubt...as I was...remove your mufflers and have a look inside the headpipe collector. I ended up installing the SE Street Performance mufflers...nice sound and 50 state legal.
Jim,
You made my day.... BUT,.....I was doing some reading just before you posted and I did find the debate. Some folks were quoting thier owners manual and some saying they cut the thing apart and some say it was there and some say it ain't. WTF? Maybe half the people don't know what it is??
I think I'm just gonna ride it and not mess, but am very courious. It would be cool to have the only 09 model which did not conform
Are these documents relative to California only? Doesn't the rest of the U.S. basically do what California does? What about the 110SE? It only refers to the 96inch motors? I can see where it list 2 cats for the other bikes. Does this apply to the 2008 or 2009? July 2008 is late in the run for 2008 standards so I assue this is an 09 thing? Are they really in the mufflers now and not before? If so, for all models and are there another model exemptions each year?

The cat would be in the header pipe where the two pipes come together if your FXDF was an 2010 model. Your's is an 09 model so it should not have a cat. It's easy to check if the header pipe is off the bike. You run a hard wire down each header tube and if it comes out the other side, you don't have a cat. You would also be able to see the cat when the mufflers are removed by looking up the collector. The cat would be visible.
this easy easy to understand......some have them, some dont, some are in the header collector, some are in the muffler.......how hard is it to figure out? take your mufflers off and shine a flashlight into you muffler and or header pipe, you will see it or you wont. problem solved!

Ya, that's easy... But it even easier to type it and ask someone else that knows. Besides, asking here gives me something to do when I really should be working. I don't think rolling the HD in my office and pulling the pipes off would go over well.
But what happens if someone says its not catted and it actually is, or vice versa. I'm willing to bet that some 09s are catted and some are not depending on location.
