Well today I have a new problem with my 06 st bob, I rode to lunch got back on the bike started bike up like normal, rode out of the parking lot then i heard this growl and the charge light and engine light came on i pulled over and found that the starter was engaged and spinning when the bike was still running. I shut the bike off, looked for any problems turned the ignition switch back on and the bike started with touching the start button. I then unplug the wire going to the solenoid starter disengages and I am able to ride back to work.
after getting to work i put the wire back on and all is normal, shut it off a couple times and restart it all is good. I come back 10 min later And start it again and the starter sticks again.
After getting the test light I find that power is stayin at the green solenoid wire, even after letting off the start switch. I hoped it was simple i replace the starter relay, no luck there. i have ben looking at the book and th circut looks very simple. but still no resolve.
Well the circuit is getting closed somehow... perhaps there is an internal problem with the starter switch in the grip housing. I had mine apart last night while relocating my front directionals from the handle bars to the forks, and from what I've seen its a spring loaded "momentary" switch, and it's not outside the realm of possibilities that something is out of spec within that switch.... just keep tracing it "upstream" towards the battery until you find the culrprit.
Possibly being worn aside, isn't the starter just "doing what its told" when voltage is applied from upstream, or is there more than a negative and positive wire going to it?
The starter solenoid is what causes the pinion gear to engage on the clutch basket gear and start the motor ... if anything it is that the solenoid is still getting power ... the starter itself may not (or may) be getting power ....
I'd check the power to the solenoid and or faulty solenoid ... then look at a mechanical issue such as a broken spring that would cause the pinion gear to retract or something holding the pinion gear in the engaged position ....
I have ben doing test i know for sure its not the starter or the solenoid, when the starter stays on the green wire at the starter has power on it all the time it should only have power when the button is pushed. I have changed the relay, but did not work, the bars have ben on the bike for 15,000 miles, If it was a short in a ire the wire would have to shorted to a nother positive wire on the bike not to ground on the bike. thinking it must be the switch. can you purchase just the replacement switches or do you have to get the hole housing assmbly. thanks chris

Not necessarily so Chris. Its more a fact of if the wires have ever been spliced. Length of time is not a factor in that. In theory you could be getting a power feed from another circuit while not shorting to ground. How about you try pulling light and blinker fuses to see if the problem goes away? (eliminate all other possible power sources to the starter switch)
The other thing is before spending your hard earned money on a new starter switch as a shot in the dark, take that handlebar housing apart. Its only two screws to check, and a lot can become very apparent with a visual inspection

I have taken the switch housing apart no signs of anything in there, I have pulled the fuse from the lighting circut no change there. every time I try to use the test light to start checking for the problem the problem stops and all is normal again. I need it to mess up with the switches loose so I can check and see if there is power on both sides of the switch, but it will start working before I can do that. When riding the bike I am pulling the relay out after I start it so the starter does not engage at highway speeds. I do not want to spend money on the switches if i don,t have to.
